A Beautiful Grit – Piero Umiliani

Soundtrack to the film “Una Bella Grinta,” directed by director Giuliano Montaldo (released in 1965 by the CAM label)

The musical themes of the Italian film are composed by pianist and conductor Piero Umiliani and performed by the quintet consisting of: Gato Barbieri (soprano saxophone and leader), Franco D’Andrea (piano), Enrico Rava (trumpet), Gegè Munari (drums), Gianni Foccià (double bass).

The lineup in the period between 1964 and 1965 performed regularly at “Purgatorio” – a jazz club located in an underground room of the “Meo Patacca” Restaurant near Rome’s Trastevere district – while working on soundtracks for Italian cinema. In addition to the film “Una Bella Grinta,” the quintet participated in 1964 in the recording of the soundtrack for “Before the Revolution,” by director Bernardo Bertolucci, which was later scrapped in favor of the one composed by Ennio Morricone and Gino Paoli.
