Bowie – Giammarco in concert

Unreleased recording of African-American trumpeter Lester Bowie’s 1987 concert in Rome with, among others, saxophonist Maurizio Giammarco

In the summer of 1978 Maurizio Giammarco participated in a series of concerts together with African American trumpeter Lester Bowie, accompanied by Massimo Urbani, Tommaso Vittorini and Roberto Gatto. As a result of their collaboration, in the fall of the same year, the Italian saxophonist was invited by Lester Bowie to leave with him for the United States to play with the “Sho’ Nuff” orchestra, made up of sixty musicians from Chicago’s Afro-American avant-garde scene, including, David Murray, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Henry Threadgill, Eddie Gomez, and Jack DeJohnette. Maurizio Giammarco takes part in Lester Bowie’s orchestral ensemble concert on Feb. 17, 1979 at Symphony Space in New York City.
