Dino Piana and Helen Merrill

Trombonist Dino Piana is pictured with US singer Helen Merrill in 1961.

In the 1950s Helen Merrill collaborated with pianist Earl Hines and recorded her first solo record in 1954 featuring Quincy Jones, Jimmy Jones, Clifford Brown and Oscar Pettiford.

In the 1960s he moved to Italy where he collaborated with Chet Baker, Romano Mussolini, Stan Getz and Piero Umiliani. The EP “Helen Merrill Sings Italian Song” (1960 – RCA Italiana) features arrangements by Ennio Morricone and orchestra conducted by Armando Trovajoli.
