Ella Fitzgerald was one of the great singers of contemporary jazz. In the 1930s she was enlisted in the orchestra conducted by drummer Chick Webb, later to become one of the finest interpreters of the compositions of the great American composers, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and George Gershwin, as a result also of her inimitable technical ability in the field of scat vocals
