Enrico Pieranunzi: piano/Kenny Wheeler: trumpet and flugelhorn/Chris Potter: tenor and soprano sax/Charlie Haden: double bass/Paul Motian: drums
In 2003 Enrico Pieranunzi recorded a record to pay tribute to director Federico Fellini on the 10th anniversary of his death
Accompanying him during the recording sessions are drummer Paul Motian, with whom the pianist had recorded the previous year’s duo recording work Doorways, bassist Charlie Haden, saxophonist Chris Potter, and Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler
Keeping in mind the peculiar personalities of the four extraordinary musicians Pieranunzi writes the arrangements for the musical themes of Nino Rota and Louis Bacalov
The solo parts included within the thematic exposition of the songs are also distributed following a similar criterion
Examples are, “The Vitelloni,” “City of Women,” “The Road.” Two are the compositions written by Enrico Pieranunzi a few days before the recording, “Cabiria’s dream” and “Fellini’s Waltz,” recorded as a duo with Charlie Haden
In the liner notes, Ira Gitler, journalist, jazz historian and author with Leonard Feather of “The Biographic Encyclopedia of Jazz,” writes, “Pieranunzi creates an analogy between the way jazz musicians play and how director Fellini shapes his films.”
