Article (by Giuseppe Dalla Bona) entitled “Gianni Basso – Thirty Years of Jazz” published in the magazine Musica Jazz (August-September 1976)
In the interview with Musica Jazz, Gianni Basso tells about his beginnings as a saxophonist in Belgium where he had moved with his father for work
Following his return to Turin, he settled in Germany where he played with German and American musicians and then moved to Holland, Switzerland and Poland. The saxophonist finally returned to Italy in 1955.
Speaking of the free jazz movement in Italy, in which he had also taken part by recording a record with Franco D’Andrea and Franco Tonani, the saxophonist says – “With the advent of free music, many musicians have taken a step forward because they have learned to express themselves with more freedom, without feeling too bound to certain formulas, to determine harmonies … in my small experience in this field I have been able to break out of the usual formulas. And when I went back to doing the things I used to do, I approached them with a new mindset, less conditioned than I was before.”
