Pablo All Stars Jam

Album entitled Pablo All Stars Jam. The record was recorded live on July 14, 1977 at the Montreux Jazz Festival and released in 1980 by Gruppo Editoriale Fabbri (in collaboration with the Pablo Records label) in the series directed by Bruno Schiozzi “Jam Session” (record notes edited by Luca Cerchiari and Marcello Piras)

On the occasion of the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival, U.S. impresario and producer Norman Granz organized a jam session involving six leading names from the American and European jazz scene-Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn), Ronnie Scott (tenor sax), Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Oscar Peterson (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (double bass), Bobby Durham (drums)

The sextet performs the standards “Pennies From Heaven” and “Sweethearts on Parade,” “Samba De Orfeu,” a musical theme by Brazilian singer and guitarist Luis Bonfa, included in the soundtrack of the film “Orfeo Negro,” “God Bless the Child,” a song brought to success by African-American singer Billie Holiday

In the liner notes, music critic Luca Cerchiari about the jazz festival held in the Swiss town writes – “Born in 1967 with the aim of having a jury of experts choose the best ensembles sent from 12 countries of the Old World, the festival has grown year by year, first qualitatively, then especially quantitatively.

In fact, the record industry identified the Swiss event as a profitable promotional opportunity for its artists and took advantage of the festival to record an incredible amount of live material such as the unreleased releases in this series… and the many live recordings that have littered, in past years, our discos… “

Note: Norman Granz founded Verve Records in 1956 and Pablo Records in 1973.

The entire material recorded on analog media shared by Michele Zottis was digitized and restored by sound engineers at Saint Louis College of Music in Rome under the supervision of Paolo Marra, curator of the Archives of Jazz in Rome.
