Article by Massimo Villa titled “Pop coming from the ‘country’”
In the article, the journalist highlights how the instances of political and social struggle embodied by the labor and student movement of ’68 produced in Italy, in the early part of the 1970s, a cultural renewal welded to the rediscovery and enhancement of popular tradition and culture
The young musicians make a creative synthesis between the lexicon of folk language and the study of other musical idioms, including electric and contemporary – “For a dying rock, which is increasingly losing those innovative connotations, somewhat social content that it undoubtedly possessed, at least on a spectacular level, ten years ago, the answer seems to arise between the folk values of our tradition and contemporary modes of expression derived equally from rock and jazz.”
Among the ensembles and musicians mentioned in the article active in that turn of time in creating a blend of Italian folk ethos and avant-garde music effectively revitalizing rock as much as the electro-acoustic development of jazz we find: Napoli Centrale, PFM, Area, Gaetano Liguori, Patrizia Scascitelli, Guido Mazzon, Franco Battiato
