The Best Modern Jazz in Italy

Album entitled The Best Modern Jazz in Italy by the Basso-Valdambrini Sextet recorded in 1962 in Milan, Italy.

Gianni Basso: tenor sax/Oscar Valdambrini: trumpet/Dino Piana: trombone/Renato Sellani: piano/Giorgio Azzolini: double bass/Lionello Bionda: drums

On June 9, 1962, four ensembles performed at the Teatro San Marco in Milan – Quartetto di Lucca, Quartetto Cerri-Intra, New Jazz Society, Sestetto Basso-Valdambrini with Dino Piana – as part of a national competition organized by the Elizabeth Arden cosmetics house, producer of the“Arden For Men” line. The latter formation won first prize, recording a record sponsored by“Arden For Men” shortly thereafter.

In addition, the award included a series of performances at New York’s historic jazz clubs, Half Note and Birdland. In November of that year, the group left for the“Big Apple,” where, however, they could not perform due to a veto by Local 802, the New York Musicians Union
