In 1946, the American pianist with vibraphonist Milt Jackson, drummer Kenny Clarke and bassist Ray Brown formed a group that served as the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie‘s Big Band. The group in 1952 took the name Modern Jazz Quartet with Percy Heath on double bass replacing Ray Brown. Three years later Conny Kay replaced Kenny Clarke on drums. With this line up, the Modern Jazz Quartet will become one of the longest-running ensembles in jazz history
In the late 1940s John Lewis took part in Miles Davis’ Nonetto, along with Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Gunther Shuller, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, among others, for the recording of the album Birth of The Cool
John Lewis was, along with cornrist and composer Gunther Shuller, one of the main proponents of the Third Stream current, in which elements of the European classical school, such as the fugue, are combined with the jazz idiom that is more closely aligned with its traditional form and less close to the bebop idiom
