The course“AI and music: creativity and innovation – entry level, curated by Fabio Balestrieri, is designed for people who love to explore the marriage of music and technology, and who want to learn about the creative and technical processes of modern music production, give their music the sound they have always dreamed of, and, most importantly, turn their passion for music into a real career path.

Course content and structure

This course introduces students to the conscious use of a DAW for music production, starting with basic audio settings, creating audio and MIDI tracks, and recording instruments and vocals even in the home studio. Work is done onediting clips, automations and using virtual instruments to program drums, basses and synthesizers.

One module is devoted to AI-assisted composition: from generating lyrics consistent with style and genre, to creating melodies from the emotion and rhythm of words, to developing complete arrangements. Artificial intelligence is used as a creative tool to overcome blocks, explore melodic and harmonic alternatives, and define the identity of the song.

Melodic composition on existing arrangement is then tackled, working on expressiveness, dynamics and articulation, with the possibility of transforming MIDI sequences into realistic vocal lines through dedicated software.

The course continues with the fundamentals of mixing and mastering, from balancing tracks to using equalization, compression and reverbs, and preparing the final track for distribution. Finally, stemmization and analysis is introduced, which is useful for studying complex structures, extracting parts for remixing, or creating transcriptions and scores.

Pre-requisites for entering the course: basic knowledge of the major scale and chords; minimal knowledge of a daw.
