BACHELOR OF MUSIC
Three-year Bachelor’s Degree in Composition. The educational path for preparing modern film music composers.
Strengthening composition techniques for image-based music, including documentaries, films, commercials, short films, and applied music in general. The program fosters creativity and technical compositional skills, offering a unique opportunity in Italy to work with musical ensembles ranging from string quartets to Beethovenian symphony orchestras for the performance and direction of students’ own scores.

The course has a limited number of places, open to a maximum of 12 students coming from Saint Louis foundation courses or selected through audition.
The study path follows a dual approach. One track leverages all the potential offered by music informatics, including virtual instruments, virtual orchestras, sequencing programs, and music editing for images. The other focuses on the practice of orchestration and conducting real orchestras, featuring strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and soloists.
- Study of 19th and 20th century internationl classical composers and contemporary composers for film music such as John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Alan Silvestri, Michael Nyman, Hans Zimmer and weekly implementation of sound projects.
- Advanced study of piano as an instrument for composition, orchestration and extemporaneous reading of orchestral scores
- Development of instrumental knowledge and orchestration techniquesfor film music, with resident orchestras performing their own scores each year.
- Professional skills in the use of virtual and hybrid orchestras, sequencer recording, use of effects and mixing skills.
- Deepening, through the study of various ensembles, music languages and the most important compositional techniques, to obtain the most suitable technical tools to optimally express the own musical creativity
- Each student directs his or her own compositions in both studio and live settings
- Writing original soundtracks in partnership with Italian and European filmmaking schools and training institutes
At the end of the three-year bachelor‘s degree program, students can continue their advanced studies in the master’s degree programs in Composition (Film Scoring) or Applied Music.

Every year, Saint Louis provides Composition students with various orchestral formations, including a string quartet, a saxophone quintet, and a Beethoven-style orchestra, allowing them to perform and conduct their own compositions. This offers a unique experience for young composers.
