ELECTRONIC MUSIC
BACHELOR
Bachelor Program in Electronic Music – Bachelor’s Degree recognized by the Ministry of Education (MUR).
The Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Music (Composition Track) is an innovative program designed to train electronic music producers, sound designers, and composers capable of combining artistic research, technology, and sound experimentation.
The three-year program offers advanced training in electronic composition techniques, sound synthesis, audio programming, and the professional use of state-of-the-art software and digital tools. Students develop specific technical and cultural skills to design, produce, and perform original works, using state-of-the-art electronic instruments, programming environments, and software applications.
The program integrates creativity with technological mastery, fostering the development of a personal artistic language within the fields of contemporary electronic, electroacoustic, and multimedia music.
Duration 3 years
Attendance 350 hours of classes per academic year
Where Rome and Milan, Saint Louis College of Music
Language Italian and English
The Bachelor of Arts in Composition & Film Scoring course has a limited number, aimed at a maximum of 26 students each academic year, coming from Saint Louis’ pre-academic courses or selected from external candidates by audition.
The program trains producers, composers, and performers of electronic music, integrating composition, sound design, and performance. The curriculum explores models of interaction between sound and technology, with a particular focus on feedback systems, generative processes, and advanced sound synthesis techniques.
Students explore audio programming environments, neural synthesis tools, machine learning applied to sound, and algorithmic generation systems, developing skills in the design of complex sound ecosystems and in contemporary electroacoustic composition.
The program also includes historical and technical analysis of the leading figures in 20th-century and contemporary electronic and experimental music, including Iannis Xenakis and Gottfried Michael Koenig, as a reference for the development of a personal and informed musical language.
- Composition of electronic and electroacoustic music. Audio programming, sound synthesis, tape music, aleatoric music, field recording, algorithmic composition, and generative systems.
- Live electronics and digital performance. Use of Ableton Live, synthesis techniques (Analog, Wavetable, Operator), plugin architectures (VST and Audio Units), sound design with virtual instruments, audio editing (Audacity, Cecilia), FM synthesis, and real-time electronic performance management.
- Applied music and multimedia sound design. Composition and sound design for films, documentaries, commercials, installations, and audiovisual projects.
- Harmony and compositional techniques. Construction and harmonization of melody, progressions, chord loops, modes and post-modes, polylinear writing, and development of secondary melody in original compositions.
- Study of the piano as a working tool for the electroacoustic composer, for the formal, harmonic, and structural elaboration of musical material.
- Original artistic productions created in collaboration with national and international organizations and institutions, with the development of performance and multimedia projects.
Upon completion of the three-year program, students are awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronic Music, a qualification recognized by the Ministry of Education (MUR).
This program provides direct admission to two-year Master’s programs (authorized by the MUR), with the option to pursue specialized studies in Live Electronics, Music Production, Mixing & Mastering, Sound Design, and Applied Music.
Continuing on to the two-year program allows students to delve deeply into advanced electronic composition techniques, complex sound design, interactive performance systems, and immersive technologies.
