BACHELOR OF MUSIC

Three-year Bachelor diploma program in Jazz Guitar. Development and research of own personal style in jazz, from traditional to be-bop to contemporary jazz.

Individual jazz guitar lessons and professional workshops with renowned jazz musicians, with concerts alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Study and use of jazz compositional and arranging techniques aimed at record and live productions. Development of professional skills on sequencers and virtual instruments.

It is a limited students number course, open to a maximum of 8 students per year, coming from Saint Louis pre-academic courses or selected through audition.

The training of the Jazz Department ranges from the origins of Jazz to Swing, from Be-bop to Free Jazz up to contemporary jazz artists, in a current and professionalizing vision. The Jazz Board, heading the Jazz Department, is composed of Ramberto Ciammarughi, Antonio Solimene, Umberto Fiorentino, Rosario Giuliani, Cristiano Mastroianni, Stefano Mastruzzi

A full-immersion course in jazz, the entire course is structured to approach jazz from all possible angles: on the instrument, in ensembles, in improvisational groups, in orchestras, in arrangement and composition courses, in recording studio practice, and in music production. The best works of the students are published by the Jazz Collection label and promoted in live concerts by Saint Louis Management.

  • Individual Jazz Guitar lessons with a teacher of the student’s choice.
  • Professional Jazz Ensemble with fortnightly attendance, with renowned artists leading the band, from the trio to the octet.
  • Three-year study of improvisation with jazz musicians such as Ramberto Ciammarughi, Rosario Giuliani, Alessandro Gwis, Dario Deidda.
  • Advanced study of jazz contemporary harmony and modal harmony.
  • Development of the student’s own jazz compositional style and jazz arrangement techniques for rhythm section and 5 brass/winds, melodic rhythmic paraphrases, tonal effects, shape, solo section, Background writing, Shout chorus, Shooting / variations, ending, tails, codettes and interludes
  • Advanced study of the Jazz repertoire on piano, themes and acronyms, study of the comping of soloists and singers, with walking bass, too.
  • Customization of the student’s study plan, choosing subjects and workshops also from other departments, such as ensembles, orchestras, music production, a second complementary instrument and numerous research activities that stimulate interplay, creativity and the construction of one’s own personal music style.

At the end of the 1st Cycle academic three-year period (Bachelor level), the student will be able to continue his/her further studies in the two-year 2nd Cycle Courses (Master level) (acknowledged by the Ministry of Education) in Jazz Guitar, Pop-rock Guitar, Songwriting, Music Production, Applied Music.

Jazz professional ensembles represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time right at Saint Louis, with renowned teachers who not only direct the ensemble but are part of it as soloists and instrumentalists. They represent an opportunity for extraordinary growth as students can play and confront an established artist, experience the construction of a real repertoire and perform alongside him/her in Italian Clubs and Festivals. They therefore represent a ticket to enter the world of work and an experience in the student’s artistic curriculum.

The student chooses his/her own ensemble teacher, it is also possible to participate in the ensemble with the already formed student’s band, so as to grow together.

Every year 30 different professional labs are formed, here are some of them:

  • Jazz 4et, 5et, 6et with Rosario Giuliani: Bop and hard-bop formations with the most representative Italian soloist.
  • Jazz Quartet with Ramberto Ciammarughi: Groups of experimentation and jazz in-depth approach with the great Maestro Ramberto Ciammarughi.
  • Jazz 8et with Maurizio Giammarco: JJazz, fusion, be-bop and beyond with the extraordinary Maurizio Giammarco, active on the Italian and international scene for over 40 years.
  • Jazz tango with Javier Girotto: Mixed formation of 5-8 elements to discover the original repertoire of Javier Girotto and Astor Piazzolla.
  • Jazz fusion with Umberto Fiorentino: The most contemporary Jazz with an undisputed protagonist of Jazz.
  • Jazz Trio with Fabrizio Sferra: Trio ensemble with the most prolific drummer for Italian Jazz, Fabrizio Sferra.

Mandatory attendance to the minimum extent of the 80% of the lessons.

  • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held with fortnightly cadence, organized in alternate weeks, with the exception of the instrument / singing lesson which can be organized at the student’s choice on a weekly or fortnightly basis. About 300 hours of classes per year.
  • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who, for work or distance reasons, are unable to attend all the lessons provided for in the study plan can personalize their own study plan choosing how many subjects to attend from year to year. Part-time attendance implies a probable extension of the course of study beyond 3 years.

  • Sax Ensemble with Rosario Giuliani: 5 saxophones and rhythm section for the ensemble directed by Rosario Giuliani. The ensemble will focus on a repertoire dedicated to the genius of Charlie Parker, proposing his solos, extracted from the standards that were permanently part of his live shows, and arranged with 5 voices, along with some original songs by Rosario Giuliani himself.
  • Saint Louis Combo & Big Band, conducted by M° Antonio Solimene: A great orchestral experience that leads musicians to play professionally in important locations and festivals throughout Italy, accompanying internationally renowned artists on stage.
  • Storytellers Diary by Giovanni Candia: Ensemble that provides a synthesis between electronic music and contemporary jazz, through the dialogue between electronic sound and the development of extemporization and improvisation typical of jazz.
  • Latin Louis Combo conducted by Natalio Mangalavite: 16-element ensemble, together to perform the jazz repertoire with South American and Caribbean rhythms.

  • Pop Orchestra conducted by Vincenzo Presta: Formation of over 20 elements, rhythmic section, brass section, strings, voices to host the greats of Italian and international Pop.
  • Soul Train Revolution: Inspired by the homonymous famous American music tv show, Soul Train R-Evolution is a line-up of 20 musicians whose repertoire focuses on ‘Black Music’ in its widest sense, coexisting the tradition of Soul, Funk, Jazz and African music, with elements of Neo-Soul, Gospel, Hip-Hop, Fusion and electronic music.
  • I Love Pizza by Serena Brancale: An ensemble that is not based on vocal power or technical and instrumental virtuosity, but on the inventiveness of musicians in creating innovative sounds out of the ordinary thanks to Loop stations, keyboards, Pads, effects and laptops for rhythmic and vocoder for singers.
  • Latin Louis Combo conducted by Natalio Mangalavite: 16-element ensemble, together to perform the jazz repertoire with South American and Caribbean rhythms.
  • Synth Louis: Experimental ensemble that was born as a tribute to electronic music, synthesizers and more generally electronic musical instruments in all their forms, open to instruments, singers, drummers, electronic musicians.
  • Progressive Rock by Daniele Pomo: The history of 1970s Progressive Rock, British and Italian and contemporary Progressive: from Genesis to PFM to the last frontiers of Rock and beyond.
  • Twenty Guitars by Diego Cignitti: Ensemble composed exclusively of electric guitars that rereads the repertoire of the great history of Italian and international Rock. 20 guitars that play, explode, harmonize and dialogue. A wall of sound completely new.

  • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who, for work or distance reasons, are unable to attend all the lessons provided for in the study plan can personalize their own study plan choosing how many subjects to attend from year to year. Part-time attendance implies a probable extension of the course of study beyond 3 years.

  • Jazz Department: Jazz improvisation courses, jazz harmony studies, jazz arrangement for rhythm section and 5 horns, arrangement for big band.
  • Popular Music Department: Music Management courses, choir writing and arrangement, Black Music, Neo-Soul, Writing and arrangement for pop orchestras, Digital Marketing, Konnakol, Ethnic Music, Creative Writing.
  • Composition and Applied Music Department: Courses in music for images, music for video games, music for films, sonorization of commercials, orchestration, traditional harmony studies, contrapuntal techniques.
  • Department of Electronic Music: Courses in electronic music, Live Electronics, Ableton, Reaktor, Max for live.
  • Sound Engineering Department: Courses in miking, mixing management, running your own home studio, mastering.

Admission tests are usually held in June and, for places remaining available, in September. International students can sit the admission tests online from February of the previous year until June the latest.

  1. See the Study Plan and Admission Tests: Check that your preparation is in line with the skills required for the individual tests by clicking on “download study plan.”
  2. Fill outthe application for admission: You can submit your application for the entrance exam for Level I and Level II academic courses from Feb. 3 to April 30 (by clicking on the “apply” button in the upper right corner). Applications submitted subsequently may be considered only on the basis of the places remaining available.
  3. Wait for the call and take the admission tests: The admission exam to the three-year first cycle of academic courses is divided into several tests, aimed at verifying the candidate’s personal skills and which exactly reflect the contents of the entire pre-academic path of Saint Louis.

Dal 2012 il Saint Louis partecipa al programma Erasmus+ che offre la possibilità ad ogni studente di livello Accademico di realizzare dei periodi di mobilità in altri Istituti di Alta Formazione Musicale Europei ed Extra-Europei per progetti di studio o di tirocinio.

Ogni studente potrà dunque usufruire di un massimo di 12 mesi di studio o tirocinio all’Estero per ogni ciclo di studio (12 mesi max nel triennio, 12 mesi max nel biennio), scegliendo la propria meta tra una ampia ed eccellente offerta di Partner esteri che il Saint Louis ha istituito e consolidato nel tempo.
