Three-year degree in Pop Guitar – MUR-recognized Level I academic diploma

The Level I Academic Diploma in Pop-Rock Guitar is a three-year course aimed at the conscious development of the student’s personal style through in-depth study of the languages of contemporary popular music. The program integrates the roots of rock-blues with the evolutions of funk, black music, soul and contemporary productions.

The training consists of individual guitar lessons and workshop activities devoted to ensemble music and live performance, in collaboration with active professional musicians. Teaching activities are geared toward the development of advanced technique, improvisation, comping, solo phrasing and stylistic interaction in the various contexts of Popular Music. Special attention is paid to music production skills, through the use of professional software, sequencers and virtual instruments, now central elements in the profile of the professional musician.

As part of the individual lessons, the student can direct his or her path toward the electric guitar or acoustic guitar, delving into their repertoire and expressive techniques. The electric guitar-focused path explores the language of rock-blues, fusion, contemporary jazz, black music, and modern electric sounds. The acoustic guitar-focused pathway explores acoustic pop, country blues, folk, and specific techniques such as fingerpicking, strumming, and flatpicking,

The Level I academic course in Pop Guitar is limited in number, open to a maximum of 10 students each academic year from Saint Louis’ pre-academic courses or selected from external candidates by audition.

The three-year Level I Academic Course in Pop-Rock Guitar is structured to deal in depth with the languages of Popular Music, integrating instrumental study, ensemble practice, improvisation, arranging, composition and music production. Training is developed through individual and group activities, orchestral experiences and recording studio sessions, fostering comprehensive preparation in performance, creativity and production.

In ensemble music workshops, the teacher assumes the role of ensemble director and an integral part of the band, guiding the artistic and interpretive work of the group. The teachers are recognized and active professional musicians and participate in live performances together with the students.

The best artistic projects created by the students are selected for publication by the Camilla Records label and promoted through concert activities curated by Saint Louis Management, with a view to continuity between academic training and professional activities.

During the three-year period, the student develops skills in the following training areas:

  • Individual Pop-Rock Guitar Lessons. Customized course geared toward the development of advanced technique, improvisation, comping and solo phrasing, with the possibility of focusing on electric guitar or acoustic guitar, delving into specific languages and expressive techniques.
  • Ensemble and live performance. Formations from trio to large ensemble to analyze and interpret traditional and contemporary international repertoire. The teacher is ensemble director and an integral part of the band, with live performances in clubs and festivals.
  • Arranging and songwriting. Study of harmonic language and orchestration applied to real bands and virtual instruments, with realization of professional pre-productions of original projects.
  • Recording Session. Studio practice with the rhythm section, aimed at developing performance precision, sound management and adaptation to the production context.
  • Supplementary plan. Study of modern piano as a tool to support harmonic understanding, extemporaneous reading of acronyms, and arrangement development.
  • Music Production. Professional use of music production software and digital technologies central to the recording industry today.
  • Personalization of the curriculum. Integration with workshops, orchestras, complementary second instrument, master classes with international artists and live performances, fostering the construction of a conscious artistic identity.

Upon completion of the three-year degree, the student earns the Level I Academic Diploma in Pop Guitar, a degree recognized by the Ministry of University and Research(MUR).

The course also allows students to continue their studies in the Level II Academic Diplomas in Pop Guitar, Songwriting, Applied Music and Music Production, also recognized by the MUR, further deepening their artistic specialization in performance, composition and production.

Nel 2017 inizia la collaborazione con Frenetik & Orang3 per la produzione artistica del progetto CIGNO. Nel 2018 e 2019 partecipa al Corso di formazione e perfezionamento su Albeton e Ableton Push alla SAE di Londra e alla London Academy Music of London. Nel 2021 è il vincitore dell’Arezzo Wave nel Lazio. Nel 2022 pubblica il suo album “Morte e Pianto Rituale”.     The professional Jazz ensembles represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time precisely at Saint Louis, with renowned instructors who not only direct the ensemble but also participate as soloists and instrumentalists. They provide an extraordinary growth opportunity as students can play and engage with an established artist, experience the development of a real repertoire, and perform alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Thus, they serve as an entry ticket into the professional world and a notable addition to one’s artistic resume.

    Students can choose their workshop instructor, and it’s also possible to participate in the workshop with their already-formed band to grow together.

    Each year, 30 different professional workshops are established. Here are a few examples:

    • Jazz Quartet, Quintet, Sextet with Rosario Giuliani: Bop and hard bop formations with the most representative Italian soloist.
    • Jazz Quartet with Ramberto Ciammarughi: Groups focused on jazz experimentation and exploration with the great Maestro Ramberto Ciammarughi.
    • Jazz Octet with Maurizio Giammarco: Jazz, fusion, be-bop, and beyond with the extraordinary Maurizio Giammarco, active on the Italian and international scene for over 40 years.
    • Jazz Tango with Javier Girotto: Mixed formations of 5-8 elements exploring the original repertoire of Javier Girotto and Astor Piazzolla.
    • Jazz Fusion with Umberto Fiorentino: The most contemporary jazz with an undisputed protagonist of Jazz.
    • Jazz Trio with Fabrizio Sferra: Trio workshops with the most prolific drummer for Italian Jazz, Fabrizio Sferra.

    Attendance is mandatory for at least 80% of the classes.

    • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held biweekly, on alternating weeks, except for the instrument/singing lesson, which can be scheduled by the student on a weekly or biweekly basis. Approximately 300 hours of classes per year.
    • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who cannot attend all the classes required by the study plan due to work or distance can customize their path by choosing how many subjects to attend each year. Part-time attendance may result in an extension of the study program beyond the standard 3 years.

    • Sax Ensemble with Rosario Giuliani: A 5-saxophone and rhythm section ensemble directed by Rosario Giuliani. The ensemble will focus on a repertoire dedicated to the genius of Charlie Parker, featuring his solos, excerpts from standards that were regularly part of his live performances, arranged for 5 voices, along with some original pieces by Rosario Giuliani himself.
    • Saint Louis Combo & Big Band directed by Antonio Solimene: A major orchestral experience that allows musicians to perform professionally at top venues and festivals across Italy, accompanying international artists on stage.
    • Storytellers Diary by Giovanni Candia: An ensemble blending electronic music and contemporary jazz, featuring a dialogue between electronic sounds and the improvisational and extemporaneous elements typical of jazz.
    • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble performing jazz with South American and Caribbean rhythms.

    • Pop Orchestra directed by Vincenzo Presta: An ensemble of over 20 members, including rhythm section, winds, strings, and voices, hosting major Italian and international pop artists.
    • Soul Train Revolution: Inspired by the famous American music program, Soul Train R-Evolution is a group of 20 musicians with a repertoire centered on ‘Black Music’ in its broadest sense, combining the traditions of Soul, Funk, Jazz, and African music with elements of Neo Soul, Gospel, Hip Hop, Fusion, and electronic music.
    • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble with a jazz repertoire infused with South American and Caribbean rhythms.
    • Synth Louis: An experimental ensemble that pays tribute to electronic music, synthesizers, and electronic musical instruments in all their forms, open to instrumentalists, singers, drummers, and electronic musicians.
    • Progressive Rock directed by Daniele Pomo: The history of 1970s British and Italian Progressive Rock and contemporary Progressive Rock: from Genesis to PFM and the latest frontiers of Rock and beyond.
    • Twenty Guitars directed by Diego Cignitti: An ensemble composed exclusively of electric guitars, revisiting the repertoire of the great history of Italian and international Rock. 20 guitars that play, explode, harmonize, and interact, creating a whole new wall of sound.

    • Guitar ensemble: A group of classical guitar ensembles for the performance and analysis of pieces from the classical repertoire.
