COMPOSITION AND APPLIED MUSIC

PREPARATORY COURSE

Intensive preparatory course in Composition for admission to bachelor courses.

A path resulting from a careful fusion of traditional studies, such as counterpoint, orchestration, and contemporary professional issues, to provide the tools and skills to realize one’s musical ideas.

The preparatory composition course has a duration ranging from 1 to 2 years, depending on the level of each student; it is accessed through an audition.

Applied music studio, music for films, commercials, short films, documentaries, dance, theater, multimedia applications. Students will be able to develop their compositional skills with the help of ensembles and orchestras of real instrumentalists and with an in-depth study of virtual instruments.

Skills are acquired in the following areas:

  • Study of traditional and contemporary compositional techniques for piano, voices and strings.
  • Study of 3- and 4-part florid counterpoint and use in contexts of film music and music applied to images.
  • In-depth study ofclassical and contemporary harmony up to 9th 11th and 13th and altered chords.
  • Study of piano technique and the instrument as a means of composing.
  • Music technology, sequencing software, notation software, virtual Instruments.

Upon successful completion of the last level of the pre-academic course, one automatically enters Level I academic courses, choosing from:

  • three-year 1st cycle academic diploma in Film Music Composition
  • three-year level I academic diploma program in Applied Music

Each year, each student will tackle image-sounding experiences, and his or her original compositions will be performed by various ensembles, from string quartet to wind quintet, ending, at the end of each pre-academic year, with a performance by a 30-piece live orchestral ensemble, conducted by the same student, in a theater in Rome in sync with the images.

The pre-academic course offers a choice of four different attendance modes:

  • Ordinary Attendance: Weekly attendance, with classes ranging from 6 to 10 hours, concentrated over 2-4 days each week. This mode allows for guided learning at every step, with continuous monitoring of progress. An average study commitment of 6 hours daily is required. Certain subjects offer both in-person and fully online attendance options.
  • Long-distance Attendance: The pre-academic long-distance course entails from 6 to 8 hours of lessons concentrated every Friday afternoon online (Ear Training and Harmony) and on Saturdays, one week in person and one online. Ideal for students residing outside of Rome or those with busy schedules, including working professionals. The long-distance mode with Saturday classes is exclusive to the pre-academic course.
  • Teen Music Academy Attendance: Tailored for high school students, this personalized course engages students for 1 or 2 afternoons per week, with the aim of preparing them for academic courses upon high school graduation. Exceptionally talented students may be admitted to academic courses even before graduation. Some subjects offer both in-person and fully online attendance options.
  • DAD Attendance: Fully remote education option, suitable for students worldwide.

INSIGHTS

  • Full-time attendance: Classes are mostly scheduled on a weekly basis, for a total of 350hours per year
  • Online attendance: Classes are held online; a weekly lesson in presence is scheduled in February, as the exams in June.
