The short course “DJing – The Technical and Operational Foundations,” curated by Federica Ferracuti in art HU, is designed for those who want to build a solid foundation in DJing: learning how to consciously use mixers, CDJs and effects, analyze tracks, manage the performance and get to make a coherent and technically correct DJ set, independently.
Course content and structure
The course addresses DJing in its entirety, from mastering the instrument to reading the live context. It is not just about learning how to mix-it means developing a working method, technical discipline, and the ability to read the moment.
The course starts with technical equipment preparation: structure and operation of the Pioneer V10 mixer, CDJ 3000s, and RMX effects processor. Knowing your instrumentation in depth is the first step to acting on stage without hesitation. We go on to analyze the song: structure, phrasing, BPM and how these elements guide mixing choices. Knowing how to listen and decode a song is the skill that distinguishes a technical DJ from a music DJ.
The core module is devoted to fundamental mixing techniques: beatmatching, transitions, headphone track management, and choice of input and output timing. Work is done on timing, fluidity and consistency of sound flow. Large space is reserved for the use of EQ, filters, and effects: tools that, when mastered, allow the sound to be shaped expressively and build tension, dynamics, and surprise throughout the set.
We then address the preparation of the set and organization of the material: selection, cataloging, scaling the tracklist to the context. A set is built long before you get on the console. The course closes with context reading and performance management: how to adapt to the audience, space, time and conditions of the moment. The technique serves the music; the music serves the listener.
