Three-year Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Drums.

Development and exploration of one’s personal style in jazz, from tradition to bebop to contemporary jazz.

Individual drum lessons and professional workshops with renowned jazz musicians, including performances alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Study and use of jazz composition and arrangement techniques, aimed at recording and live productions. Development of professional skills in sequencers and virtual instruments.

It is a limited students number course, open to a maximum of 8 students per year, coming from Saint Louis foundation courses or selected through audition.

The Jazz Department’s training spans from the origins of Jazz to Swing, from Be-bop to Free Jazz, and includes contemporary jazz artists, offering a current and professional perspective. The Jazz Board, which leads the Jazz Department, is composed of Ramberto Ciammarughi, Antonio Solimene, Umberto Fiorentino, Rosario Giuliani, Cristiano Mastroianni, and Stefano Mastruzzi.

A full-immersion course in jazz, the entire course is structured to approach jazz from all possible angles: on the instrument, in ensembles, in improvisational groups, in orchestras, in arrangement and composition courses, in recording studio practice, and in music production. The best works of the students are published by the Jazz Collection label and promoted in live concerts by Saint Louis Management.

  • Professional Jazz Ensemble with fortnightly attendance, featuring renowned artists as band leaders, ranging from trio to octet.
  • Three-year study of improvisation with jazz musicians such as Ramberto Ciammarughi, Rosario Giuliani, Alessandro Gwis, Dario Deidda.
  • Advanced study of jazz contemporary harmony and modal harmony.
  • Development of the student’s own jazz compositional style and jazz arrangement techniques for rhythm section and 5 brass/woodwinds, melodic rhythmic paraphrases, tonal effects, shape, solo section, Background writing, Shout chorus, Shooting/variations, endings, codas, codettas and interludes.
  • Advanced study of the jazz repertoire on piano, including themes and chords, as well as comping for soloists and vocalists, including walking bass techniques.
  • Customization of the student’s study plan, choosing subjects and workshops also from other departments, such as ensembles, orchestras, music production, a second complementary instrument and numerous research activities that stimulate interplay, creativity and the construction of one’s own personal music style.

At the end of the 1st Cycle academic three-year period (Bachelor level), the student will be able to continue his/her further studies in the two-year 2nd Cycle Courses (Master level) (acknowledged by the Ministry of Education) in Jazz Drums, Pop-rock Drums, Songwriting, Music Production, Applied Music..

    The professional Jazz ensembles represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time precisely at Saint Louis, with renowned instructors who not only direct the ensemble but also participate as soloists and instrumentalists. They provide an extraordinary growth opportunity as students can play and engage with an established artist, experience the development of a real repertoire, and perform alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Thus, they serve as an entry ticket into the professional world and a notable addition to one’s artistic resume.

    Students can choose their workshop instructor, and it’s also possible to participate in the workshop with their already-formed band to grow together.

    Each year, 30 different professional workshops are established. Here are a few examples:

    • Jazz Quartet, Quintet, Sextet with Rosario Giuliani: Bop and hard bop formations with the most representative Italian soloist.
    • Jazz Quartet with Ramberto Ciammarughi: Groups focused on jazz experimentation and exploration with the great Maestro Ramberto Ciammarughi.
    • Jazz Octet with Maurizio Giammarco: Jazz, fusion, be-bop, and beyond with the extraordinary Maurizio Giammarco, active on the Italian and international scene for over 40 years.
    • Jazz Tango with Javier Girotto: Mixed formations of 5-8 elements exploring the original repertoire of Javier Girotto and Astor Piazzolla.
    • Jazz Fusion with Umberto Fiorentino: The most contemporary jazz with an undisputed protagonist of Jazz.
    • Jazz Trio with Fabrizio Sferra: Trio workshops with the most prolific drummer for Italian Jazz, Fabrizio Sferra.

    Attendance is mandatory for at least 80% of the classes.

    • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held biweekly, on alternating weeks, except for the instrument/singing lesson, which can be scheduled by the student on a weekly or biweekly basis. Approximately 300 hours of classes per year.
    • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who cannot attend all the classes required by the study plan due to work or distance can customize their path by choosing how many subjects to attend each year. Part-time attendance may result in an extension of the study program beyond the standard 3 years.

    • Sax Ensemble with Rosario Giuliani: A 5-saxophone and rhythm section ensemble directed by Rosario Giuliani. The ensemble will focus on a repertoire dedicated to the genius of Charlie Parker, featuring his solos, excerpts from standards that were regularly part of his live performances, arranged for 5 voices, along with some original pieces by Rosario Giuliani himself.
    • Saint Louis Combo & Big Band directed by Antonio Solimene: A major orchestral experience that allows musicians to perform professionally at top venues and festivals across Italy, accompanying international artists on stage.
    • Storytellers Diary by Giovanni Candia: An ensemble blending electronic music and contemporary jazz, featuring a dialogue between electronic sounds and the improvisational and extemporaneous elements typical of jazz.
    • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble performing jazz with South American and Caribbean rhythms.

    3. Complete and Submit the Application: Fill out the application form (by clicking the “Sign Up” button in the top right corner) and submit the links to your video clips. Applications for admission to the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs can be submitted from February 3 to April 30. Applications received after this period will be considered only if there are remaining available spots.
    4. Await Pre-Selection Results: Candidates who pass the pre-selection will be invited to the admission tests, which will take place in June and September.
    5. Attend the Admission Tests: The admission tests are conducted over two to three consecutive days. International candidates can sit the tests online.

    Since 2012, Saint Louis has participated in the Erasmus+ program, offering each bachelor’s and master’s degree student the opportunity to undertake mobility periods at other European and non-European Higher Musical Education Institutes for study or internship projects.

    Each student can benefit from a maximum of 12 months of study or internship abroad for each study cycle (12 months max during the bachelor’s, 12 months max during the master’s), choosing their destination from a wide and excellent range of foreign partners that Saint Louis has established and consolidated over time.

    • Pop Orchestra directed by Vincenzo Presta: An ensemble of over 20 members, including rhythm section, winds, strings, and voices, hosting major Italian and international pop artists.
    • Soul Train Revolution: Inspired by the famous American music program, Soul Train R-Evolution is a group of 20 musicians with a repertoire centered on ‘Black Music’ in its broadest sense, combining the traditions of Soul, Funk, Jazz, and African music with elements of Neo Soul, Gospel, Hip Hop, Fusion, and electronic music.
    • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble with a jazz repertoire infused with South American and Caribbean rhythms.
    • Synth Louis: An experimental ensemble that pays tribute to electronic music, synthesizers, and electronic musical instruments in all their forms, open to instrumentalists, singers, drummers, and electronic musicians.
    • Progressive Rock directed by Daniele Pomo: The history of 1970s British and Italian Progressive Rock and contemporary Progressive Rock: from Genesis to PFM and the latest frontiers of Rock and beyond.
    • Twenty Guitars directed by Diego Cignitti: An ensemble composed exclusively of electric guitars, revisiting the repertoire of the great history of Italian and international Rock. 20 guitars that play, explode, harmonize, and interact, creating a whole new wall of sound.

    • Guitar ensemble: A group of classical guitar ensembles for the performance and analysis of pieces from the classical repertoire.
    • INK: A significant orchestral experience that allows guitarists to engage with the classical world of the symphony orchestra, performing original pieces written by composition students, on the stages of the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the Casa del Jazz.
    • Conducting: Workshops on performance practices in ensembles ranging from double quintets (winds and woodwinds) to the Beethovenian symphony orchestra

    Admission exams are usually held in June, with additional sessions in September for any remaining available spots. International students can sit the admission tests online from February of the previous year until June the latest.

    • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are held mostly on a biweekly basis, meaning every other week, except for the instrument/singing lesson, which can be scheduled weekly or biweekly at the student’s choice. Approximately 300 hours of lessons per year.
    • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who, due to work or distance, are unable to attend all the lessons provided by the curriculum can customize their path by choosing how many subjects to attend each year. Part-time attendance likely entails an extension of the course of study beyond 3 years.
