Master of Music

The Master in Popular music is customized based on each student’s musical inclinations for the development of his or her artistic personality and aimed at both record and concert artistic productions.

Famous artists will be the protagonists of the Ensembles, to perform alongside great musicians, start the profession and add material to the own resume. All the students will come out with a recording production release of their own artistic projects.

It is a limited students number course, open to a maximum of 5 students per year, coming from Saint Louis 1st Cycle Academic courses or selected through audition.

Educational-experiential-work path of great stylistic specialization on one’s instrument. Each student participates in multiple orchestral ensembles with which he or she will perform in numerous professional settings, such as festivals and theaters as a sideman for major artists, to complete his or her education and insertion into the working world. Each student will be followed step by step in the production of their original art projects, from writing, arranging, rehearsing, recording, mixing and finally publishing.

  • Pop-rock guitar: 70 hours of individual lessons with one or more teachers of your choice.
  • Artistic production: each student will have the use of the recording studio to produce his or her own artistic project, in collaboration with the residents of the phonics and electronic music courses.
  • Professional Ensamble: study of contemporary styles and languages, including experimental ones, not strictly linked to tradition. With the company of international artists and guests
  • Composition and Live in studio: creative labs aimed at the composition, elaboration, arrangement and production of the own original recording project.
  • Second instrument: Study of a second instrument with a view to multi-instrumentalism, chosen from Drums, Piano, Singing, Electric bass.
  • Study plan personalization: Personalization of own study path choosing from over 200 different courses from the various departments of St. Louis, a unique opportunity to expand the own skills and build a future as a professional, able to operate in multiple sectors of Music Business.

At the end of the 2nd Cycle academic two-year period, the student can complete his/her specialization studies with a specialization Master program (acknowledged by the Ministry of Education).

  • artist and band leader of original projects
  • guitarist for live performance and recording session
  • jazz arranger for small, medium and large formations
  • Public competitions for music teaching (upon reaching the 24 university or academic credits in anthropo-psycho-pedagogical disciplines and in teaching methodologies and technologies)

Due tipi di ensemble: un ensemble permanente che prova tutto l’anno e tiene concerti nei club di Roma con il docente come parte della band e una grande formazione orchestrale che concentra le prove in una o due settimane full-immersion per concerti in Teatri e produzioni discografiche. Nei precedenti anni accademici gli studenti di biennio si sono esibiti con Beppe Vessicchio, Tollak, Federico Malaman, Tulli De Piscopo, Antonella Ruggiero, Diodato, Gegè Telesforo, Serena Brancale, Saturnino.

INSIGHTS

Master academic courses includes two types of ensembles every year, a permanent ensemble that rehearses all year round and holds concerts in clubs in Rome with the teacher as part of the band and a great line-up that concentrates rehearsals in one or two full-immersion weeks for concerts in Theaters and recording productions with international guests.

  • Special Guest Jazz Ensemble: Rehearsals concentrated in 3-4 consecutive days and subsequent concert with international artists. In recent years, the two-year postgraduate students have performed alongside Aaron Parks, Gegè Telesforo, Greg Hutchinson, Tollak, Roberto Gatto, Rosario Giuliani, Peppe Servillo, Vince Mendoza, Paolo Fresu, Javier Girotto, Frabizio Bosso, Gianluca Petrella.
  • Professional Jazz Ensemble: High profile ensemble, highly demanding repertoires, interplay and improvisation, fortnightly meetings with Rosario Giuliani, Ramberto Ciammarughi, Gegè Telesforo, Javier Girotto, Dario Deidda, Fabrizio Sferra, Paolo Damiani, Amedeo Tommasi, Maurizio Giammarco, Vincenzo Presta, Natalio Mangalavite, Roberto Tarenzi.

REQUIREMENTS: Three-year undergraduate academic degree already completed or to be completed by the February session (conditional registration).

  1. See the Study Plan and Admission Tests: Check that your preparation is in line with the skills required for the individual tests by clicking on Download Study Plan.
  2. Realize the video clips for the pre-selection: Record one or more videos containing 3 songs, performed by you in a group (minimum trio) that are representative of your artistic activity. The files must be uploaded to YouTube or other similar web portals and indicated as a link on the application form.
  3. Fill out the application and send links to the video clips: You can apply for the entrance exam for Level I and II academic courses from Feb. 3 to April 30 (by clicking on the “enroll” button in the upper right corner). Applications submitted subsequently may be considered only on the basis of the places remaining available.
  4. Wait for pre-selection results: Candidates who pass the pre-selection will be admitted to the admission tests, which will take place in June and September. International candidates can sit the admission tests earlier, from March until June.
  5. Sit the admission tests: Admission tests are held in two consecutive days.

Mandatory attendance to the minimum extent of the 80% of the lessons.

  • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held with fortnightly cadence, organized in alternate weeks, with the exception of the instrument / singing lesson which can be organized at the student’s choice on a weekly or fortnightly basis. About 300 hours of classes per year.
  • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who, for work or distance reasons, are unable to attend all the lessons provided for in the study plan can personalize their own study plan choosing how many subjects to attend from year to year. Part-time attendance implies a probable extension of the course of study beyond 3 years.

Dal 2012 il Saint Louis partecipa al programma Erasmus+ che offre la possibilità ad ogni studente di livello Accademico di realizzare dei periodi di mobilità in altri Istituti di Alta Formazione Musicale Europei ed Extra-Europei per progetti di studio o di tirocinio.

INSIGHTS

Great orchestral formations with the best talented students cwho perform in theaters and festivals with internationally renowned artists. In recent years Special Guests such as Beppe Vessicchio, Paolo Fresu, Fabrizio Bosso, Antonella Ruggiero (Matia Bazar), Diodato, Tullio De Piscopo, Chiara Civello had participated.

  • Pop Orchestra conducted by Vincenzo Presta: Formation of over 20 elements, rhythmic section, brass section, strings, voices to host the greats of Italian and international Pop.
  • Soul Train Revolution: Inspired by the homonymous famous American music tv show, Soul Train R-Evolution is a line-up of 20 musicians whose repertoire focuses on ‘Black Music’ in its widest sense, coexisting the tradition of Soul, Funk, Jazz and African music, with elements of Neo-Soul, Gospel, Hip-Hop, Fusion and electronic music.
  • I Love Pizza by Serena Brancale: An ensemble that is not based on vocal power or technical and instrumental virtuosity, but on the inventiveness of musicians in creating innovative sounds out of the ordinary thanks to Loop stations, keyboards, Pads, effects and laptops for rhythmic and vocoder for singers.
  • Latin Louis Combo conducted by Natalio Mangalavite: 16-element ensemble, together to perform the jazz repertoire with South American and Caribbean rhythms.
  • Synth Louis: Experimental ensemble that was born as a tribute to electronic music, synthesizers and more generally electronic musical instruments in all their forms, open to instruments, singers, drummers, electronic musicians.
  • Progressive Rock by Daniele Pomo: The history of 1970s Progressive Rock, British and Italian and contemporary Progressive: from Genesis to PFM to the last frontiers of Rock and beyond.
  • Twenty Guitars by Diego Cignitti: Ensemble composed exclusively of electric guitars that rereads the repertoire of the great history of Italian and international Rock. 20 guitars that play, explode, harmonize and dialogue. A wall of sound completely new.
