BACHELOR PROGRAM

Level I Academic Diploma in Lyrical Singing

The three-year course trains professional singers who are ready to tackle the different languages of classical vocalism, from opera to chamber repertoire, with competence and awareness. The study of vocal technique is integrated with disciplines such as diction, phonetics, repertoire history, and stage interpretation to acquire technical competence, interpretive maturity, and stage mastery.

Students regularly perform with Saint Louis orchestras within both royal productions and public concerts, and participate in workshops with directors, collaborating masters and conductors.

The course is designed to facilitate immediate entry into the work circuit through field experiences, personalized coaching and artistic networking with opera companies, festivals, ensembles and cultural institutions.

Full-immersion course structured to approach the study of opera singing from all possible angles. Development of technique, interpretation and personal style by practicing ensemble music in different formations: in accompaniment with pianist, in ensembles, orchestras. Acquisition of skills in arranging and composition, recording room practice, and music production. Performance in real record and concert work contexts.

  • Individual lessons in opera singing, for the development of one’s vocal technique through an individualized course based on the timbral, physiological and artistic characteristics of each student that allows for the refinement of musical sensitivity and performance skills;
  • Theory and technique of stage interpretation in musical theater, with special emphasis on the opera repertoire, to develop an actorly awareness integrated with vocality through the study of stage presence, bodily expressiveness, dramaturgical analysis and interaction with space, character and stage partners;
  • Chamber Music workshop for singing and piano for developing mutual listening skills and interpretive cohesion. as well as mastery of chamber vocal repertoire in the original language;
  • Advanced study of ancient and contemporary classical harmony, music history and literature, exploring programmatic forms and some typical structures of the word-music relationship underlying the artistic and creative process;
  • Development of arranging and music production techniques;
  • Personalization of one’s curriculum by choosing subjects and workshops from other departments as well, such as ensembles, orchestras, music production, a complementary instrument, and numerous research activities that stimulate interplay, creativity, and building one’s personal musical style.

At the end of the three-year Level I academic program, the student may continue his or her advanced studies in the two-year Level II (aut. Mur) programs of Classical Music, Applied Music, Music Production.

ACCORDION JAZZ

INSIGHTS

The professional Jazz ensembles represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time precisely at Saint Louis, with renowned instructors who not only direct the ensemble but also participate as soloists and instrumentalists. They provide an extraordinary growth opportunity as students can play and engage with an established artist, experience the development of a real repertoire, and perform alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Thus, they serve as an entry ticket into the professional world and a notable addition to one’s artistic resume.

Students can choose their workshop instructor, and it’s also possible to participate in the workshop with their already-formed band to grow together.

Each year, 30 different professional workshops are established. Here are a few examples:

  • Jazz Quartet, Quintet, Sextet with Rosario Giuliani: Bop and hard bop formations with the most representative Italian soloist.
  • Jazz Quartet with Ramberto Ciammarughi: Groups focused on jazz experimentation and exploration with the great Maestro Ramberto Ciammarughi.
  • Jazz Octet with Maurizio Giammarco: Jazz, fusion, be-bop, and beyond with the extraordinary Maurizio Giammarco, active on the Italian and international scene for over 40 years.
  • Jazz Tango with Javier Girotto: Mixed formations of 5-8 elements exploring the original repertoire of Javier Girotto and Astor Piazzolla.
  • Jazz Fusion with Umberto Fiorentino: The most contemporary jazz with an undisputed protagonist of Jazz.
  • Jazz Trio with Fabrizio Sferra: Trio workshops with the most prolific drummer for Italian Jazz, Fabrizio Sferra.

Attendance is mandatory for at least 80% of the classes.

  • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held biweekly, on alternating weeks, except for the instrument/singing lesson, which can be scheduled by the student on a weekly or biweekly basis. Approximately 300 hours of classes per year.
  • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who cannot attend all the classes required by the study plan due to work or distance can customize their path by choosing how many subjects to attend each year. Part-time attendance may result in an extension of the study program beyond the standard 3 years.

  • Sax Ensemble with Rosario Giuliani: A 5-saxophone and rhythm section ensemble directed by Rosario Giuliani. The ensemble will focus on a repertoire dedicated to the genius of Charlie Parker, featuring his solos, excerpts from standards that were regularly part of his live performances, arranged for 5 voices, along with some original pieces by Rosario Giuliani himself.
  • Saint Louis Combo & Big Band directed by Antonio Solimene: A major orchestral experience that allows musicians to perform professionally at top venues and festivals across Italy, accompanying international artists on stage.
  • Storytellers Diary by Giovanni Candia: An ensemble blending electronic music and contemporary jazz, featuring a dialogue between electronic sounds and the improvisational and extemporaneous elements typical of jazz.
  • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble performing jazz with South American and Caribbean rhythms.

ACCORDION CHITARRA CLASSICA

Mandatory attendance of at least 80% of the lessons.

  • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are held mostly on a biweekly basis, meaning every other week, except for the instrument/singing lesson, which can be scheduled weekly or biweekly at the student’s choice. Approximately 300 hours of lessons per year.
  • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who, due to work or distance, are unable to attend all the lessons provided by the curriculum can customize their path by choosing how many subjects to attend each year. Part-time attendance likely entails an extension of the course of study beyond 3 years.

  • Composition and Applied Music Department: Courses in music for images, music for video games, film music, soundtracking commercials, orchestration, traditional harmony, and counterpoint techniques.
  • Department of Electronic Music: Courses in electronic music, Live Electronics, Ableton, Reaktor, and Max for Live.

The multi-stylistic professional workshops represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time at Saint Louis, featuring renowned faculty members who not only direct ensembles but also participate as soloists and instrumentalists. These workshops offer an extraordinary growth opportunity as students can play and interact with an established artist, experience the creation of a real repertoire, and perform alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Therefore, they serve as a gateway to the professional world and an entry into the students’ artistic resumes.

The Classical Guitar students will have the opportunity to develop and grow both as soloists and within traditional and unconventional ensembles. This unique experience allows for the fusion of styles in a dynamic and constantly evolving environment.

Large chamber music ensembles featuring the most talented students and professional musicians from the most important national orchestras.

  • Guitar ensemble: A group of classical guitar ensembles for the performance and analysis of pieces from the classical repertoire.
  • INK: A significant orchestral experience that allows guitarists to engage with the classical world of the symphony orchestra, performing original pieces written by composition students, on the stages of the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the Casa del Jazz.
  • Conducting: Workshops on performance practices in ensembles ranging from double quintets (winds and woodwinds) to the Beethovenian symphony orchestra.

Admission tests are held in June, and for any remaining available spots, in September. International students can sit the admission tests online from February of the previous year until June at the latest.

Since 2012, Saint Louis has participated in the Erasmus+ program, offering each bachelor’s and master’s degree student the opportunity to undertake mobility periods at other European and non-European Higher Musical Education Institutes for study or internship projects.

Each student can benefit from a maximum of 12 months of study or internship abroad for each study cycle (12 months max during the bachelor’s, 12 months max during the master’s), choosing their destination from a wide and excellent range of foreign partners that Saint Louis has established and consolidated over time.
