Sound Engineering  – Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor’s Degree in Sound Engineering trains highly qualified professionals in audio production, recording, and sound design. This comprehensive, cutting-edge program integrates technical skills, practical experience, and mastery of analog and digital technologies.

During the three-year program, students cover all the main techniques used by music producers and sound engineers in professional settings, both in recording studios and in live performance environments. Students work with analog systems and advanced digital environments, with a particular focus on Avid Pro Tools HD, participating in recording, editing, mixing, and record production sessions.

The program includes official Pro Tools 101, 110, and 201 certifications, strengthening the graduate’s professional profile in the national and international professional audio market.

The Bachelor of Arts in Sound Engineering course has a limited number, aimed at a maximum of 60 students each academic year, coming from Saint Louis’ pre-academic courses or selected from external candidates by audition.

The three-year Bachelor’s degree program in Sound Engineering is a professional training program designed to prepare qualified sound engineers capable of working in both live performance and recording studio settings.

The program includes over 1,200 hours of theoretical and practical training, with ongoing hands-on practice at the mixing console and direct mentoring by professional instructors in the field. The curriculum integrates technical skills, knowledge of analog and digital technologies, and immediate application in real-world operational contexts.

Throughout the program, students tackle all phases of audio production: multitrack recording, editing, mixing, mastering, live sound management, audio system design and cabling, use of professional DAWs, and advanced digital workflows. Practical experience in studio and live environments allows students to develop operational proficiency, technical problem-solving skills, and professional autonomy.

  • Recording, mixing, and post-production in a recording studio. Studio management, microphone techniques, use of analog outboard gear and “in-the-box” digital processors, analog and digital mixing consoles, editing, mixing, and finalization of the audio product.
  • Live sound engineering and concert management. Live miking, digital live mixing, cabling and setup, amplification systems, preamps and power amps, design and use of Point Source, Sub Array, and Line Array sound systems.
  • Professional use of Avid Pro Tools HD, with official Avid certification (Pro Tools 101, 110, and 201), the international standard for audio production and post-production.
  • Music production, sampling, and sound design. Use of Cubase, virtual instruments, modular and compact synthesizers, sampling techniques, and sound design for studio, media, and live performance.
  • Acoustics and sound technologies. Sound propagation, soundproofing and acoustic treatment, mechanical and electrical operation of transducers (microphones and loudspeakers), electroacoustic instruments (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Clavinet), and physical modeling of acoustic instruments.

Upon completion of the three-year program, students earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Sound Engineering, a qualification recognized by the Ministry of Education (MUR).

The program provides direct access to two-year Master’s programs (authorized by the MUR), with the option to pursue specialized studies in Mixing & Mastering, Sound Design, Live Electronics, and Music Production.

Continuing on to the two-year program allows students to delve deeper into advanced techniques in audio production, post-production, sound design, and the management of complex systems for studio, live, and audiovisual media, thereby strengthening their professional profile in the professional audio sector.

Students in the Bachelor’s Degree program in Sound Engineering follow the official Avid “Pro Tools Fundamentals” curriculum and can take the exams on-site to earn Pro Tools 101, Pro Tools 110, and Pro Tools 201 certifications, which are internationally recognized standards in audio production and video and broadcast post-production.

    The professional Jazz ensembles represent an innovation introduced in Italy for the first time precisely at Saint Louis, with renowned instructors who not only direct the ensemble but also participate as soloists and instrumentalists. They provide an extraordinary growth opportunity as students can play and engage with an established artist, experience the development of a real repertoire, and perform alongside them in Italian clubs and festivals. Thus, they serve as an entry ticket into the professional world and a notable addition to one’s artistic resume.

    Students can choose their workshop instructor, and it’s also possible to participate in the workshop with their already-formed band to grow together.

    Each year, 30 different professional workshops are established. Here are a few examples:

    • Jazz Quartet, Quintet, Sextet with Rosario Giuliani: Bop and hard bop formations with the most representative Italian soloist.
    • Jazz Quartet with Ramberto Ciammarughi: Groups focused on jazz experimentation and exploration with the great Maestro Ramberto Ciammarughi.
    • Jazz Octet with Maurizio Giammarco: Jazz, fusion, be-bop, and beyond with the extraordinary Maurizio Giammarco, active on the Italian and international scene for over 40 years.
    • Jazz Tango with Javier Girotto: Mixed formations of 5-8 elements exploring the original repertoire of Javier Girotto and Astor Piazzolla.
    • Jazz Fusion with Umberto Fiorentino: The most contemporary jazz with an undisputed protagonist of Jazz.
    • Jazz Trio with Fabrizio Sferra: Trio workshops with the most prolific drummer for Italian Jazz, Fabrizio Sferra.

    Attendance is mandatory for at least 80% of the classes.

    • FULL-TIME ATTENDANCE: Classes are mostly held biweekly, on alternating weeks, except for the instrument/singing lesson, which can be scheduled by the student on a weekly or biweekly basis. Approximately 300 hours of classes per year.
    • PART-TIME ATTENDANCE: Students who cannot attend all the classes required by the study plan due to work or distance can customize their path by choosing how many subjects to attend each year. Part-time attendance may result in an extension of the study program beyond the standard 3 years.

    • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble performing jazz with South American and Caribbean rhythms.

    • Soul Train Revolution: Inspired by the famous American music program, Soul Train R-Evolution is a group of 20 musicians with a repertoire centered on ‘Black Music’ in its broadest sense, combining the traditions of Soul, Funk, Jazz, and African music with elements of Neo Soul, Gospel, Hip Hop, Fusion, and electronic music.
    • Latin Louis Combo directed by Natalio Mangalavite: A 16-piece ensemble with a jazz repertoire infused with South American and Caribbean rhythms.
    • Synth Louis: An experimental ensemble that pays tribute to electronic music, synthesizers, and electronic musical instruments in all their forms, open to instrumentalists, singers, drummers, and electronic musicians.
    • Progressive Rock directed by Daniele Pomo: The history of 1970s British and Italian Progressive Rock and contemporary Progressive Rock: from Genesis to PFM and the latest frontiers of Rock and beyond.
    • Twenty Guitars directed by Diego Cignitti: An ensemble composed exclusively of electric guitars, revisiting the repertoire of the great history of Italian and international Rock. 20 guitars that play, explode, harmonize, and interact, creating a whole new wall of sound.

    • Large chamber music ensembles featuring the most talented students and professional musicians from the most important national orchestras.
    • Guitar ensemble: A group of classical guitar ensembles for the performance and analysis of pieces from the classical repertoire.
    • INK: A significant orchestral experience that allows guitarists to engage with the classical world of the symphony orchestra, performing original pieces written by composition students, on the stages of the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the Casa del Jazz.
    • Conducting: Workshops on performance practices in ensembles ranging from double quintets (winds and woodwinds) to the Beethovenian symphony orchestra

    Admission exams are usually held in June, with additional sessions in September for any remaining available spots. International students can sit the admission tests online from February of the previous year until June the latest.
