A native of Rome, born in 1962, Jacopo Fiastri has forged his own musical path by exploring various musical styles and instruments: guitar, percussion, trumpet, piano, electronic music, and wind ensemble arrangements. He earned a diploma in Band Instrumentation in 1989 and in Composition in 1990 from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, after attending composition courses at the Ottorino Respighi Music Association and a course in Film Music at CEFIM in Latina.
Since the mid-1980s, he has worked as a music consultant in film, collaborating on Carlo Lizzani’s *Mamma Ebe* and Margarethe von Trotta’s *Fear and Love*, for which he composed *Jeux* for two trumpets and two trombones. In 1989, he composed the music for the album “Sax Appeal” for XANDIrecord and worked alongside conductor Vladimir Delman during the RAI filming of the series dedicated to Tchaikovsky. He also composed “Contrapuncta,” an adagio and fugato for string orchestra, and “Burlesca valzer,” for flute, cello, and piano—a piece that in 2002 was a finalist in the “L’ironia e la musica” competition organized by the Tactus Fugit publishing house, leading to its release on both CD and in print.
The theater soon became his main focus. He composed incidental music for plays by Shakespeare (“Romeo and Juliet”), Chekhov (“The Overturned Carriage”), Feydeau (“Bébé’s Purge,” “The Cat in the Pocket”), Plautus (“Aulularia”), Neil Simon (“Just When I Laugh,” “Two Bachelors and a Blonde,” “Plaza Suite,” “Laughter on the 23rd Floor”), and Agatha Christie (“Death on the Nile”). He has also composed original works such as “Profezia antica,” a lyric piece for baritone, viola, and percussion based on a text by David Maria Turoldo, which he conducts in concert, and “Il giovane ricco,” an oratorio for soloists, choir, orchestra, and narrator.
For over three decades, he has worked closely with Claudio Insegno, composing the music for numerous theatrical productions—including “Morti da legare,” “Splatter,” “Lost,” and “Esse o esse”—as well as the soundtracks for his films, from “Alta infedeltà” to “Una notte agli studios,” and “Ed è subito sera.” He also composed the musical *The Wizard of Oz*, written and directed by Daniele Scarabotti and Claudio Insegno, and the musical comedy *What Are Men For?* by Jaja Fiastri, directed by Lina Wertmüller.
In the 2000s, he also worked in television, composing the soundtracks and orchestrations for several RAI TV dramas directed by Stefano Reali, including “Le ali della vita” and “Le ali della vita 2,” starring Sabrina Ferilli, and “L’uomo sbagliato.”
In recent years, he has continued to compose for the theater, writing the music for “Billy, Meet Sammy” and “On the Run with the Loot,” up to his 2025 works for “Bacco, Tabacco… and Ashes” and “We Are the End of the World,” by Claudio Insegno and Stefano Minotti. That same year, he also composed the abridged version of Waltz No. No. 2 from Dmitri Shostakovich’s Suite for Jazz Orchestra, arranged for mixed sextet.
A pianist and keyboardist since 1982, he has played in jazz, rock, fusion, and Brazilian music groups over the years, and has composed advertising jingles broadcast on national networks, including the Johnson’s Baby Shampoo and Cisk Beer campaigns.
He has always combined his work as a composer with teaching. Since 2022, he has been teaching Music for Visual Media and Composition at Saint Louis College of Music in Rome.
