COMPOSITION AND HARMONY

Mario Gagliani, a graduate in Composition, Conducting, Choral Music and Conducting and Band Instrumentation. In addition, he received the Diploma of Higher Education in Orchestral Conducting, with Maestro Donato Renzetti, at the Higher School of Music Academy in Pescara.

As a composer, he is the author of symphonic, chamber, and sacred music, stage music for theater, as well as symphonic band music. His work is performed in Italy and abroad. Winner of composition competitions (Di Iorio of Atessa, Boario of Turin, Mottola, etc.), some of his works have been included as compulsory pieces in music competitions.

Parallel to composition, he devoted himself to conducting, working with Italian orchestras and wind orchestras. In 1998, he won the “Maurizio Rinaldi” award given to the best student in the conducting class at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. Thanks to this award, he made his public debut conducting A. Dvorak’s “Stabat Mater” for soloists, choir and orchestra in the Sala Accademica of the Conservatorio di S. Cecilia in Rome.

Next, he conducted De Falla’s “El retablo di maese Pedro,” G.B. Pergolesi’s “La serva padrona,” G. Verdi’s “La Traviata. In 2000, he won the competition for titles and exams as Deputy Director of the Navy Central Band, conducting in Italy and abroad: Auckland, New Zealand, Cairo, Alexandria, Egypt. He has been a jury member in national and international composition and wind orchestra composition competitions and has taught courses for orchestra and band conductors.

To his activity as composer and conductor, he alternates an intense chamber music activity, as piano accompanist, winning several competitions (Lauri Volpi of Latina, etc.). He conducts, also, research in the areas of music analysis and theory and in the history of composition. He writes music analysis in the music magazine “The Pegasus.”

In November 2018 he was invited as a representative for Italy to the Festival de la Habana – Cuba, where some of his works were performed and where he gave lectures at the “Colegio Universitario San GerĂ²nimo.”

In April 2019, he held a masterclass at the “International workshop for students of composition” at the National Academy of Music “Pantcho Vladigerov” in Sofia, Bulgaria. Mario Gagliani in 2002 won the competition for professorship, based on qualifications and examinations, of the class of Composition.
