Class of 1976, originally from St. Petersburg, after cutting his teeth with a number of ensembles in his hometown, Sasha Mashin moved to Moscow in 1998 and began collaborating with some of the best exponents of the Russian jazz scene.

His undeniable talent earned him inclusion in the U.S. Open World educational program and the subsequent opportunity to play in New York with such genuine jazz legends as Clark Terry, Kenny Barron and Jimmy Heath.

Since 2008, the drummer has been a reference point for almost all U.S. jazz musicians passing through Russian soil, invited to perform accompanied by his band. Others include Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Lew Tabackin, Eddy Henderson, James Spaulding, Gary Smulyan, Larry Schneider, Mark Turner.

The direct line to the best African-American tradition, cultivated by being based in his native Russia and working with musicians from his home country, has enabled Mashin to develop original ideas, to think, in fact, Outside The Box, not merely reiterating ‘reassuring’ and already proven stylistic features, but seeking ever new sources of inspiration.

Sasha Mashin since February 2022 has been living in Italy and collaborating with Alex Sipiagin, Rosario Giuliani, Antonio Faraò, Robert Bonisolo, Pietro Tonolo, Paolo Birro, Mauro Negri, Michele Calgaro, Dado Moroni.
