Rosario giuliani

“Il y avait des partitions et j’ai pris un plaisir immense à les interpréter. A Terracina, le jazz n’existait pas. Mais il y a une vraie scène en Italie. Chez nous, la culture musicale est forte. On entretient avec elle des rapports intenses. Le folklore qui tient une grande place, sert d’initiation à l’art en générale et plus particulièrement à la musique.”

Rosario Giuliani the talent, this succinct but effective thought, given during an interview with a French journalist, represents Rosario Giuliani well. The score was by Charlie Parker and the musician was only 12 years old. A few years later from that encounter with the American saxophonist’s work, he will complete his classical studies at the “L. Refice” Conservatory of Music in Frosinone, earning top honors.

Tenacity-in a city where “le jazz n’existait pas”-talent, a deep passion for all music and a great technique have brought Rosario to the forefront of the European and international scene, making critics speak of him as a true revelation, une bénédiction.

The enthusiastic and triumphant tones used by the press to define Giuliani’s characteristics derive precisely from the peculiarities of the sound he can produce: with ease he can draw fluid phrasing from his saxophones, lacing himself naturally with the great saxophonists of jazz history. While inspired by models, the musician is striking precisely because of his almost instinctive originality, which is easily identifiable not only in his approach to instruments but also in the composition of scores.

Talent and recognition

Also of note is the prize list, which includes authoritative awards. In 1996 he was the winner of the prize named after Massimo Urbani and the following year of the “Europe Jazz Contest,” awarded to him in Belgium as best soloist and best group; in 2000 he won the “Top Jazz” in the new talent category and in 2010 as the best saxophonist of the year, coming first in the annual referendum held by the specialized magazine Musica Jazz. He also won the Jazz It Awards in 2010 and 2013 for best alto saxophone.

Collaborations

His collaborations in the jazz sphere are also many and prestigious, where he has had the opportunity to work alongside such outstanding musicians as Charlie HADEN, Gonzalo RUBALCABA, Phil WOODS, Enrico PIERANUNZI, Enrico RAVA, Franco D’ANDREA, Martial SOLAL, Jeff “Tain” WATTS, Mark TURNER, Kenny WHEELER, Bob MINTZER, Joe LOCKE, Joe LA BARBERA, Daniel HUMAIR, Stefano BOLLANI, John PATITUCCI, Cedar WALTON, Dedè CECCARELLI, Biréli LAGRENE, Philip CATHERINE, Sylvain LUC, Donald HARRISON, Marc JOHNSON, Joey BARON, Guy BARKER, Jean-Michel PILC, Richard GALLIANO, etc. ..

Discography

After his many recordings with various labels in Italy and beyond, in September 2000 Rosario Giuliani signed an important contract with the prestigious French record label Dreyfus Jazz, with which he recorded five highly successful albums: “Luggage” (April2001), “Mr. Dodo” (October 2002), “More Than Ever” (October 2004) feat. …If one winter night a traveler, outside the town of Malbork, leaning out from the craggy shore without fear of wind and vertigo, looks down where the shadows thicken into a network of lines lacing the moonlit carpet of leaves around an empty pit, – What story down there awaits the end? – asks, eager to hear the tale. Italo Calvino “If One Winter’s Night a Traveler”

CINEMA ITALY

What would cinema be without music? Music reveals, in fact, everything that images fail to render. The importance of the soundtrack sometimes even transcends that of the images and stories, and often great filmmakers, and the themes on this record are testimony to that, build the structure of their masterpieces around it. In Italian cinema we have had many masterpieces, and we continue to distinguish ourselves in the world for this art. A contemporary musical point of view that never betrays the melody of these unforgettable themes, but at the same time presents them with a new strength and vitality, proving their immortality and always surprising the listener with the modernity of the proposed versions.Unforgettable themes from unforgettable films, including “8 and a Half,” “Once Upon a Time in America” and “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso,” signed by the unmatched Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone. Alongside these iconic songs and composers are two originals signed by Rosario Giuliani and Luciano Biondini (Bianco e Nero and What is there what is not) that once again demonstrate the narrative power of these two great artists.

Unpublished arrangements, specially prepared by Maestro Mario Corvini to enhance both the refined phrasing of Rosario Giuliani and the enveloping, searching timbres of the MAC Saxophone Quartet, one of the quartets most appreciated for their work in protecting and innovating the Italian school.

This incredible duo pays tribute to Duke Ellington, a true giant of 20th-century music, whose ingenious compositions stand in the landscape of pure and timeless art, beyond genres and labels. TRIBUTE TO BIRD
ROSARIO GIULIANI & PIETRO LUSSU

Rosario Giuliani | Alto Sax
Pietro Lussu | Piano

A journey into the imagination and poetics of one of the greatest musicians of all time. Tribute to Bird is the latest recording work by saxophonist Rosario Giuliani and pianist Pietro Lussu on the Emme Record Label. Not just a tribute to the genius of Charlie Parker, but a dive into the intellect of a great artist that starts with a respect for tradition. Every track, every single note is the result of a study, a reflection that brings to life some of the most hidden aspects of Parker, an artist who left a fundamental legacy not only for jazz music. A courageous, visionary project that represents a real challenge to try his hand as a duo in the territory of one of the greatest saxophonists in history. As part of the project Rosario Giuliani presents two pieces of his own composition, brilliant, singular as ever and easily likened to the music of Charlie Parker. A parallelism, a bridge between past and present where old and new languages meet. This project, therefore, offers not only Bird’s songs but a fresh view of what was his great musical universe.
