Advanced Jazz Courses

Highly specialized Jazz courses at the new Saint Louis venue in Milan to deepen technique, improvisation and interplay, playing alongside established jazz stars such as Rosario Giuliani, Ramberto Ciammarughi, Dado Moroni, Furio Di Castri, Stefano Bagnoli, Bebo Ferra and Cristina Zavalloni.

Starting in January 2024, Saint Louis will inaugurate its new Milan location-the La Stilo building in the Bodio Center, near the vibrant Bovisa and Isola neighborhoods, a creative Hub within a process of redevelopment of the entire surrounding area-with intensive jazz courses, full-immersion full-day meetings on a fortnightly basis, that will give the opportunity to study and play alongside some of the most important Italian jazz musicians and to perfect oneself in ensemble music, improvisation on one’s own instrument and in ensembles, playing in trios or deepening one’s technique in piano and voice jazz duo.

Jazz Duo
with Cristina Zavalloni and Dado Moroni

How to approach the creation of a piano and voice duo, with Dado Moroni and Cristina Zavalloni. The duo is a very intimate, naked dimension. When it works, it is because a certain chemistry is created.

In the piano and voice duo, popular in both jazz and classical music, the pianist plays a great role: he accompanies, becomes an imaginary orchestra, and at the same time enjoys space and freedom.

A sensitive pianist can help a voice enormously by breathing with it, listening to its phrasing in rubato, supporting it with voicing in the most delicate intervals, modulating his or her sound according to the expressive needs of the piece, creating a compact texture in rhythmically pressing moments. It is what is called a fine work and it is done together.

Jazz Trio

Playing in a trio with the great musicians who have made the history of Italian jazz: Dado Moroni, Furio Di Castri, Stefano Bagnoli.

Learning effective interpretive slang, which every jazz musician must know how to use, comes as much from rigorous academic study as it does from experience gained in interplay and improvisational practice.

Joined by the three musicians, you will embark on a journey through the history of jazz, combining rigor and creativity, technique and experimentation, analysis and instinct, to shape the creativity and personality of each performer.

with Rosario Giuliani

Beginning with the study of thematic improvisation as a starting point for a solo, the student, under the guidance of Rosario Giuliani, will embark on a teaching path that will give him or her full mastery in the use of extemporaneous phrasing as an expression of one’s thoughts and emotions.

How to improve one’s study method, learning to create ever new and challenging exercises, to gain full mastery of instrumental techniques: use of major scales, melodic minor scales and their respective modes, hexatonic and diminished scales; how to use pairs of triads, rhythmically develop ideas and raise one’s artistic level.

A partire dallo studio dell’improvvisazione tematica come punto di partenza di un assolo, lo studente, sotto la guida di Rosario Giuliani, intraprenderà un percorso didattico che gli darà piena padronanza nell’uso del fraseggio estemporaneo come espressione dei propri pensieri ed emozioni. Come migliorare il proprio metodo di studio, imparando a creare esercizi sempre nuovi e stimolanti, per acquisire piena padronanza delle tecniche strumentali: uso delle scale maggiori, minori melodiche e rispettivi modi, scale esatonali e diminuite; come utilizzare le coppie di triadi, sviluppare ritmicamente le idee ed elevare il proprio livello artistico.

Saxophonist Rosario Giuliani, as both artistic director and member musician of the band, will guide in the specific study of the jazz language, to provide all the useful tools to express one’s creative potential to the fullest and consciously by playing in ensemble, with a peculiar focus on deepening interplay and polymetry: how to accompany a soloist, find a group sound to create the right expressive intensity, not only technical, avoiding the traps of superficiality.

Jazz ensemble di alta specializzazione sotto la guida del pianista Ramberto Ciammarughi, in veste sia di direttore artistico che di musicista membro della band.

Obiettivo del laboratorio è perfezionare al massimo la performance di ciascun musicista, raggiungendo standard di alto livello. Il repertorio spazia dagli standard jazz della tradizione a brani inediti, con arrangiamenti originali ed ampi spazi dedicati all’improvvisazione e all’interplay, sviluppando la capacità di interagire all’interno di una formazione, affrontando tutte le eventuali problematiche derivanti dallo studio condiviso di un repertorio, con particolare attenzione al proprio ruolo all’interno della band.

Creative Guitar Trio

The guitar jazz trio has a solid history behind it, from Jim Hall’s trio to Joe Pass’s to Pat Metheny and John Scofield.

Through the analysis and performance of compositions of gradual difficulty, led by an exceptional trio – Bebo Ferra on guitar, Furio Di Castri on double bass, Stefano Bagnoli on drums – problems related to the rhythmic and dynamic aspect, interplay, development of solo parts and harmony will be analyzed, in a formation in which the guitar is both a solo instrument and an instrument deputed to manage harmony.
