Masterclass year 2002, the Saint Louis Music Center hosted a series of extraordinary Masterclasses taught by national and international artists, students had the honor of learning directly from the best in their field, honing their skills and gaining valuable perspectives. Masterclass year 2002 shaped their artistic path and helped define the future of music in St. Louis.


Scott Colley (born November 24, 1963) is an American jazz double bassist and composer. He has played in bands led by Herbie Hancock, T. S. Monk (jazz drummer), Jim Hall, Andrew Hill, Michael Brecker, Chris Potter, Pat Metheny, Carmen McRae, Edward Simon, Adam Rogers, Brian Blade, David Binney, Antonio Sanchez and Kenny Werner. His musical versatility and ability to adapt to a wide range of styles and contexts make him one of the most sought-after and respected double bassists in the contemporary jazz scene. His career is marked by a series of high-profile collaborations with some of the biggest names in jazz music, confirming his status as a leading figure in the music world.

Kim Plainfield taught private lessons and taught courses at the NYC Drummers Collective from 1979 until his passing. For much of that period, he served as faculty president. His dedication and expertise have left an indelible imprint on the local music community, inspiring generations of drummers. His passion for music and his commitment to teaching will remain an enduring legacy, continuing to influence and motivate drum enthusiasts around the world. Kim Plainfield will be remembered not only as an outstanding teacher, but also as a mentor and icon in the drumming world.


Antonio Sánchez ‘s rapid rise in the world of jazz drumming began during his days at the Conservatory, when Paquito D’Rivera contacted his teacher, Danilo Pérez, to recommend a drummer for Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra. Pérez signaled Sánchez, who thus joined the band on tour. Later, in 1997, Pérez invited him to join his trio, which received a Grammy nomination for the album “Motherland.” Sánchez’s participation in the tour also reached the ears of legendary guitarist Pat Metheny, who invited him to play in the Pat Metheny Group after a series of auditions. These important encounters marked the beginning of an extraordinary career for Sánchez in the world of jazz music.


Gretchen Parlato is an American jazz singer. She has performed and recorded with such musicians as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Barron, Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard, Marcus Miller, and Lionel Loueke. Her distinctive voice and unique style have helped make her a prominent figure in the contemporary jazz scene. Parlato is known for her ability to explore and reinterpret jazz repertoire in innovative ways, mixing elements of tradition with modern influences. Frank McComb is a soul singer and record producer.
