Masterclass year 2022

In 2001, the Saint Louis Music Center hosted a series of extraordinary Masterclasses taught by national and international artists, students had the honor of learning directly from the best in their field, honing their skills and gaining valuable perspectives. These experiences shaped their artistic paths and helped define the future of music in St. Louis.

LUCA STRICAGNOLI

Luca Stricagnoli presents the master class “When Notes Become Emotions” at Saint Louis.An absolutely “Made in Italy” talent who gives definitely bewitching sounds during his performances, thanks to his truly unique fingerstyle, he boasts more than 200 million views of his online videos, which have led him to perform live in every corner of the planet, so much so that he is considered, in his genre, one of the best guitarists on the world stage.
His remarkable creative style led him to invent instruments such as the “Inverted Three-Handle Guitar” and the “Inverted Slide Neck,” with which he largely contributed to the evolution of the acoustic guitar.

JONATHAN KREISBERG

Combining impeccable technique with a deep knowledge of improvisational languages, Jonathan Kreisberg has shown relevant musical and expressive consistency, both in the various recordings he has made with Larry Grenadier, Bill Stewart and Ari Hoenig, among others, as well as in his live performances.
Jonathan Kreisberg DFor years the holder of a weekly fixture at New York’s La Lanterna club, Kreisberg on his Italian tour comes with a quartet of excellent musicians, starting with Martin Bejerano, a pianist with Afro-Cuban sounds who has collaborated with the likes of Roy Haynes and Russel Malone, the eclectic Australian double bassist Matt Clohesy, who plays regularly with artists such as Seamus Blake, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and David Kikoski, and Colin Stranahan on drums, formerly alongside Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Kevin Hays, among others.

TOMMI RAUTIAINEN

Master class with Tommi Rautiainen, visiting professor from Metropolia UAS Helsinki and special guest of European Jazz’s cool, entitled “International studio work as a session musician.” It will discuss how to develop sight reading and memory.

ALEX SIPIAGIN

New York-based trumpeter Alex Sipiagin is a full-fledged member of the close circle of JAZZ WORLD TOP PLAYERS, having made a significant impact on the history of contemporary jazz through albums and live performances with the best musicians of the day.
Among many are Gil Evans Band, Gil Goldstein Orchestra, George Gruntz Band, Bob Moses Band, Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dinasty , Mingus Orchestra, Dave Holland Group, Michael Brecker Quintet and Sextet, Dave Sanborn, Antonio Sanchez, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, touring the world and establishing himself as a virtuoso of his instrument.
He also has to his credit excursions into the pop world with artists such as Eric Clapton, Dr John, Aaron Neville, Elvis Costello and legendary producer Phil Ramone with whom he has won numerous Grammy’s .
As a group leader he has numerous albums to his credit of which we only point out the most recent in order of time “Overlooking Moments” recorded together with Chris Potter, Scott Colley, Eric Harland.

PETER BERNSTEIN

Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been part of the New York and international jazz scene since 1989. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous recordings and performances with such musicians as Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, George Coleman, Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Fathead Newman, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cobb and many others.
As a leader, he released nine albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke. His current projects include the “Monk” album with Doug Weiss and Bill Stewart, and the recently released solo record, Solo Guitar – Live at Smalls and the acclaimed trio with organist Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart.
