Dado Moroni

Began playing piano at the age of 4 as a self-taught player. In the following years he played as a professional in different parts of Italy and, at the age of 17, recorded his first album and began a collaboration with Tullio de Piscopo and Franco Ambrosetti that lasts to this day.

Negli anni ’80 Moroni si esibisce in Europa suonando in diversi festival e club, portando avanti una lunga collaborazione con il trio del bassista di Duke Ellington Jimmy Woode al Widden Bar di Zurigo.

Given his great musical talent, at the age of 25 he was invited as the only European musician to serve on the jury of the 1987 Thelonious Monk International Piano Prize held in Washington, DC. Tra i membri della giuria vi sono i pianisti Hank Jones, Barry Harris e Roland Hanna.

Nel 1988 inizia una lunga tournée che lo porta a suonare per conto del Dipartimento di Stato Americano con il sestetto di Alvin Queen in sette paesi dell’Africa.

Successivamente collabora con Clark Terry e George Roberts alla tournée mondiale organizzata dal governo svizzero per la celebrazione del settimo centenario della Confederazione Elvetica.

Moroni moved to the United States in 1991 and became part of the New York jazz scene, taking on roles as both leader and musician in several bands.

Dado Moroni during his years in the Big Apple played in the most prestigious clubs including the Blue Note, Birdland and the Village Vanguard, as well as playing on a number of albums.

In 2007 he won the “Best Jazz Act” award at the Italian Jazz Awards. He currently lives in Italy and continues to perform internationally. In 2010 he released the CD Shapes together with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Enzo Zirilli.

In May 2012 he performed as part of the jazz event “New Conversation” in Vicenza, Italy, in a piano trio with the two American pianists Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller.

Dado Moroni is professor of jazz piano at the Conservatorio Antonio Vivaldi. To date he has played on more than 50 albums for major record labels such as Sony Concorde, Contemporary Telarc Mons, TCB Record and Enja.
