Christian Meyer

Christian Meyer was born in Milan on January 27, 1963, to a Swiss father and a Milanese mother; from the age of 11 he began studying drums with Maestro Enrico Lucchini. At the age of 18, he opted for Swiss citizenship only to avoid military service.

Since the early 1980s, professional collaborations began. In 1982 he moved to Frankfurt for a year and collaborated with Brazilian and American musicians.

In 1983, he returned to Italy and resumed his study of drums and began his first musical collaborations in jazz making his bones at Capolinea in Milan where he played every Saturday night with the Bolii-Bozza quintet. In 1987 he joined the jazz group “ARP Quintet” and with percussionist Naco in Tino Tracanna’s sextet.

In 1990 he officially joined the group Elio e le Storie Tese considering it “a band of high musical quality.” They would remain united for more than 30 years sharing a variety of live and studio adventures and earning the respect of colleagues from all musical backgrounds, classical-pop-jazz-rock…

In 1999 he and his colleagues created a unique drumming-only band La Drummeria, a percussion orchestra formed in addition to Meyer by four other drummers-Maxx Furian, Ellade Bandini, Paolo Pellegatti, and Walter Calloni. The Drummeria performs spectacular live shows based on group solos and theatrical moments using drums as a means of expression.

In 2002, he founded Trio Bobo together with Faso and Alessio Menconi. The idea stems from their need and pleasure to freely tackle their favorite musical genres such as afro, jazz, Latin music and jazz-rock.

In 2003 he was invited to Los Angeles to the fourth edition of “GROOVE NIGHT 04” which hosts the world’s greatest drummers, together with Rick Marotta – Michael Bland – John Robinson – David Garibaldi – Questlove – Dave Weckl – Jamie Oldaker – Gerry Brown, etc. The rule is: no drum solos but only groove with the band.

In 2009 he created together with pianist Paolo Alderighi and clarinetist Alfredo Ferrario the Color Swing Trio. An exciting Band playing the music of the “30s – “40s with grit, energy and lots of swing!

Yamaha Corporation years earlier had created exclusively for a tour by Elio e le Storie Tese, the famous “Yamaha oak custom Switzerland,” a drum kit with the typical coloring of the Swiss flag.

In 2020 Christian Meyer joined the group Heroes (A tribute to David Bowie) along with Paolo Fresu, Petra Magoni, Gianluca Petrella, Francesco Diodati and Francesco Ponticelli.
